AREA OF EXPERTISE:
Good with a hoover and housework in general. In my spare time I ride a bike. Turns out I can ride a bike a long way.
EXPERIENCE IN # OF MILES COVERED WITH TJB:
All those miles are in my legs except the ones where I am driven to the start line. I'd guess around 250,000 since the inception of Team Joe Barr in 2009.
ENDURANCE RACING HAS TAUGHT ME:
Things get better with age if you allow them to. Experience counts. Wisdom comes with continued effort. You can go further than you think. It doesn't matter how fast you go, it matters that you keep on going.
MOST CHALLENGING MOMENT SO FAR:
Allowing my team to take me to hospital during RAAM (Race Across America) 2012. It was my first experience with altitude sickness. Any race that results in a DNF (did not finish) is challenging but one that size and one that I had dreamed of finishing for over 25 years – that hurt. Made finishing RAAM 2014 all the sweeter though.
BEST MOMENT SO FAR:
Being part of a merry band of misfits that have pulled off some amazing results. If all cycling teams could operate with the blend of intense professionalism and fun that Team Joe Barr brings, cycling would be a different sport.
SIGNATURE PHRASE WHEN RACING:
“This is a disaster!”
FAVOURITE TJB ‘ISM’:
“Shut up and ride the bike Joe.”
