WE MOVE AS ONE
AREA OF EXPERTISE: Good with a hoover and housework in general. In my spare time I ride a bike. Turns out I can ride a bike a long way.
EXPERIENCE IN # OF MILES COVERED WITH TJB: All those miles are in my legs except the ones where I am driven to the start line. I'd guess around 250,000 since the inception of Team Joe Barr in 2009.
ENDURANCE RACING HAS TAUGHT ME: Things get better with age if you allow them to. Experience counts. Wisdom comes with continued effort. You can go further than you think. It doesn't matter how fast you go, it matters that you keep on going.
AREA OF EXPERTISE: Nutrition expert and roadside cook, back-up driver in training. Do NOT let me navigate.
EXPERIENCE IN # OF MILES COVERED WITH TJB: Only about 3500 but I'm a fast learner!
ENDURANCE RACING HAS TAUGHT ME: To plan meticulously for the possible and allow for the impossible. And the impossible can go either way. Either I didn't imagine that something could go that wrong or that awesomely!
AREA OF EXPERTISE: Crew chief, main driver, (reluctant) back-up navigator, tall person for lifting equipment on/off car roof.
EXPERIENCE IN # OF MILES COVERED WITH TJB: I started acting as support for Joe before the creation of TJB, attending race meets and sportives all over the North and South of Ireland. Race mileage would have to be in the tens of thousands not including travel by road or air.
ENDURANCE RACING HAS TAUGHT ME: The human body is a remarkable piece of engineering which has astonishing capabilities. Assume nothing, expect anything, trust your instincts and learn how to ‘wing it’. Never forget you have been part of an amazing experience.
ANDREW (ANDY) MCMULLAN
AREA OF EXPERTISE: Generalist – driver, navigator, race watcher, enthusiast, organiser, administrator, cleaner, doer of dishes, analyst, waste disposal.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS: Physiotherapist and Sports Scientist
EXPERIENCE: TJB - RAAM, Race Across Italy, Malin-Mizen-Malin (record), Donegal Ultra. Other; Mizen-Fairhead
MOST CHALLENGING MOMENT: RAAM day five crossing the Rockies, no sleep, a tired altitude suffering Joe, communication systems issues and RAAM in the balance.
AREA OF EXPERTISE: Practical man and a cool, calm head and beard. Great in a high viz vest, can fix anything. Support car driver. Hot water specialist. Extra muscle for lifting the heavy bikes. Only happy when moving. Wannabe cyclist.
EXPERIENCE IN # OF MILES COVERED WITH TJB:
Fairly recent addition to the team, having been swept away when having a leisurely evening at Joe’s with Alan, amazing what saying ‘yeah, ok, I’m up for that' can lead to.... Helped with Joe’s record breaking End to End to End in November 17. Ever present since!
ENDURANCE RACING HAS TAUGHT ME: An individual is nothing without a team, and the team are only there for the individual. There is no ‘one-way’ to success, all teams do things differently but still achieve results.
AREA OF EXPERTISE: First aid, cooking, good idea man and general all rounder - Haven’t found my Achilles heel yet anyway!
EXPERIENCE IN # OF MILES COVERED WITH TJB: 3500 and counting, the road is endless and JB keeps on keeping on!
ENDURANCE RACING HAS TAUGHT ME: Pain and suffering are all a necessary part of the process, for TJB they are also inevitable and essential stepping stones on the road to achievement, accomplishment and success.
AREA OF EXPERTISE: Logistics and race planning, wrenching (master of the zip-tie), driver, and back-up for everything except lifting equipment on/off car roof. Occasional training partner and domestique.
EXPERIENCE IN # OF MILES COVERED WITH TJB: About 10,000 miles covered with Joe; most of that with Joe on his bike ten yards in front of the van, much of it with him sitting in the copilot’s seat getting to race locations, and a sliver racing or training on his wheel. Pretty good for a rookie year with the team, and looking forward to many more.
ENDURANCE RACING HAS TAUGHT ME: "Wherever you go, you meet a part of your story.” I’m privileged to have a sport that has been a life-long passion, and the pursuit of that has opened doors to more experiences than I could’ve imagined. I get to see this sport from multiple perspectives (crew, racer, event organizer and WUCA officer) and I’ve seen how a shared passion can transcend diverse backgrounds to create a community.
